Ariza Bridge

History:
It is a bridge built over the Guadalimar River with plans by the Renaissance architect Andrés de Vandelvira and financed by the bishop of Jaén, Don Diego de los Cobos y Molina, as it is the main communication route between Úbeda and the northern part of the province.

The master stonemason was Antón Sánchez, between 1563 and 1575, the latter year of Vandelvira's death. It is considered the most beautiful and important engineering work of this distinguished architect. Since 1998, as a consequence of the entry into operation of the Giribaile Reservoir, it was left unused for transit and inexplicably submerged under water. Today, due to the drought, it has re-emerged.
Description:
It belongs to the type of long span vault bridges that were built at that time, in the northern part of Andalusia. Its factory is made of sandstone ashlar, with 5 barrel vaults, the central one exceeding 31 m in span, also having a double-thread mouth. Originally, it had a ridged profile, brick parapets and semicircular cutwaters downstream and triangular upstream. However, the repair carried out in 1868 rebuilt the cutwaters in an inadequate manner and rectified the grade, lowering the donkey's back, although it is still noticeable. All of this currently gives it a certain heterogeneous appearance.
