St. Mary's Church - The Basílica of Santa María de los Reales Alcázares

This church is located at Plaza Vázquez de Molina. It was built on the remains of a mosque, after the conquest of the city in 1233 by Fernando III el Santo.
This temple has undergone several transformations. It was originally a temple with three naves, separated by pillars and pointed arches, with a rectangular apse and covered with wooden ceilings. In the 14th century, the number of naves was increased and new chapels were built. In the 18th century, the wooden ceiling was replaced by baroque vaults, which were removed during the restoration works carried out between 1983 and 2011.

One of the most outstanding elements is its Gothic cloister in the shape of an irregular trapezoid, built at the end of the 15th century over the original ablutions courtyard of the mosque and attached to the wall of the alcázar.
The exterior of the church follows a uniform architectural line. The main doorway, which dates from the first half of the 17th century, is framed by two belfries and its central motif is the Adoration of the Shepherds.
