Chapel of El Salvador

This chapel was commissioned to the architect Diego de Siloe by Francisco de los Cobos to serve as a mausoleum for him and his wife Dña María de Mendoza. Although Diego de Siloe did the planning of the building, the works were commissioned to Andrés de Vandelvira. He was the one who solved the main construction problems.

The interior of the church has a central nave finished with a domed apse and six side chapels. The intersection between the vault of the central nave and the dome was solved by Diego de Siloé in an extraordinary way by means of what we call "a toral arch". No one until that moment had given such an architectural solution.

The main altarpiece is the work of the sculptor Alonso Berruguete and was almost entirely destroyed during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). However, it was restored very faithfully during the post-war years. The organ located at the top of one of the side chapels was a musical jewel of the Baroque and it was almost totally destroyed. It was restored in the first decade of the 21st century.
